Proceed with caution
1996 Ford Transit
The 1996 Ford Transit is a true workhorse, but its age and commercial origins mean it demands diligent maintenance to stave off common issues. While fundamentally robust, severe rust and aging complex components, particularly in the diesel fuel system and electricals, make a pre-purchase inspection absolutely critical to avoid significant financial outlays.
Why this year scores low
Corrosion is endemic, attacking sills, wheel arches, door bottoms, floor pans, and critical chassis rails, often leading to structural compromise if left unchecked. This is its Achilles' heel.
On 2.5L Di/TDI engines, the Lucas CAV/Delphi DPC injector pump is a known failure point, developing leaks or internal wear, leading to poor starting, rough running, and eventual breakdown. Injectors also wear out.
Aging wiring harnesses, poor earthing points, faulty relays, and instrument cluster issues (e.g. speedo/tacho failure) are common, causing intermittent faults, non-starts, and accessory malfunctions.
