2012 Audi A5
The 2012 Audi A5 presents a compelling package of style and performance, but it's not without its caveats. While a joy to drive, buyers must be acutely aware of the potentially expensive engine and transmission issues common to this model year. This isn't a car for the financially faint of heart, but a well-maintained example can offer a rewarding ownership experience.
Why this year scores low
The 2.0L TFSI engine is notorious for excessive oil consumption due to faulty piston rings, often requiring an expensive engine rebuild. Timing chain tensioner failures are also common, leading to stretched chains and potential catastrophic engine damage if not addressed.
The 7-speed S-Tronic (DSG) transmission is prone to mechatronics unit failure, resulting in erratic shifting, loss of gears, or complete transmission failure. The Multitronic CVT in FWD models can also exhibit shuddering or hesitation issues due to internal wear.
While not always catastrophic, common electrical gremlins include MMI system malfunctions (freezing, blank screen), intermittent sensor failures (ABS, airbag), and issues with window regulators or door lock actuators.
